Jem Herbert is a passionate, committed and versatile musician based in Melbourne, Australia. He is currently the Conducting Scholar of the Choir of Trinity College (Melbourne), Director of the Trinity Singers, a student répétiteur at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Choral Director at Geelong Grammar School, Timbertop and a freelance pianist and composer. A former chorister of the Australian Boys Choir and graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS), Jem has been surrounded by music from an early age. At school, Jem studied piano with Len Vorster, conducting with Dr David Kram and Voice with Carrie Barr. Upon graduation, he received the Ian Harrison Composition Award and Principal’s Award from VCASS as well as the Premier’s Award for a perfect score in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) subject, Music Investigations. Beyond school, Jem completed his undergraduate studies in Music in Australia at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM) and at Durham University in the UK, receiving top grades from both institutions. Majoring in piano performance, Jem learnt under Professor Ian Holtham and David Murray, heads of the Keyboard faculty at the MCM and Newcastle University (UK) respectively. Jem’s teachers in composition and orchestration throughout university included Professor James Weeks and Carl Vine AO. | ![]() |
