Pianist

Jem began learning the piano as a child. He then attended the Victorian College of the Arts secondary School as a music student, Australia’s premier secondary school for the training of young musicians. Here, he learnt from eminent South African pianist, Len Vorster and Julliard-trained, Caroline Almonte. He graduated from school with a perfect score in Music Investigations, for which he received the Victorian Premier’s Award.

In 2020, Jem went on to study with the head of Piano, Professor Ian Holtham, at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music on a generous scholarship. Here, he received a First-Class honours for all his piano exams and recitals. For his final year of his undergraduate, Jem was accepted into Durham University, UK on exchange where he learnt from David Murray, Head of Piano at Newcastle University, UK.

Jem is currently completing a Masters of Music at the Conservatorium as a trainee répétiteur, where he works with and coaches opera singers. While working with singers is his specialisation, he has recently given solo recitals, performed chamber music and is a keep improvisor in a variety of formal and informal settings. Growing up around a diverse range of musicians from church organists to Jazz pianists, Jem draws from a diverse range of styles in his improvisations.
